2012 ACRA National Championships

LAKE LANIER, GAINESVILLE, GA — The following are photographs and videos from the 2012 ACRA National Championships. Most notable is that this race course has 8 full-buoyed lanes. For the Mens V8 Grand Final, a crew was placed in an outside lane (lane 0) and so nine 8+s raced. It was pretty amazing.

Positions:

  • Chief Judge (Saturday AM)
  • Referee (Saturday PM)

2012 Vespoli Matrix 26 1x

On Saturday, May 12, 2012, I took delivery of a custom-made 2012 Vespoli Matrix 26 1x at the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, PA. It was transported back to Charleston along with the University of Charleston Women’s Crew and is now rigged and stored in the UC Boathouse.

I’ve taken the boat out on the Kanawha River twice and am working on tweaking the rigging. It is clear that the boat is very responsive, quick, and much more forgiving than my old 1995 model Vespoli 1x. The hull shape is wider at the cockpit and narrower in both the bow and stern sections. This lowers my center of gravity and makes the boat much more stable.

Susan G. Komen 5k Run – 2012

Results: Age Group – Overall

Madelene and I both ran in the Susan G. Komen 5k on May 5, 2012. Starting at the WV Capitol, the run proceeds West on Kanawha Boulevard, East, to the South Side Bridge, where competitors turn and return.

With a time of 27:09.11, Madelene finished fourth in her age group (1-13) and 222 overall. With a time of 19:49.42, I finished second in my age group (45-49) and 20th overall. Phillip Combs, a classmate of mine beginning in the second grade, finished first in the age group.
